Nigel Spackman has told ‘The 32’ that the only way forward is to create a home-grown quota in the Premier League.

The former Chelsea and Rangers midfielder is concerned by the lack of young English players coming through at top clubs.

Spackman, speaking as a guest on Yahoo’s latest daily World Cup show, doesn’t think the positivity surrounding the England side at the moment should paper over the cracks.

Now the ex-Sheffield United manager wants a mandatory number of players clubs have produced themselves in squads on matchdays.

“Managers see it as too much of a risk in the Premier League to give these young players a chance and that’s a worry for me,” he said.

“There should be a quota of how many home-grown players are involved in a match day going forward.

“You want your young players playing at the top level to give them the best experience possible.

“You have to look at my old club Chelsea – the last player to come through and be successful was John Terry. That was a long time ago now.

“Then you look at Liverpool, only Trent Alexander-Arnold has been produced lately and they are a club who pride themselves on players from the local area.

“Manchester City it’s got to be said are the same, and only really Marcus Rashford has come through United’s youth system over in a number of years.”
