5 best cars for $20,000

There are great cars at every budget level. Yahoo Finance has partnered with Autoblog to bring you the best cars around $20,000, and we looked through Autoblog’s new car listing pages to create a list of the best five cars (plus one extra).

If $20,000 is over your budget, we’ve got you covered with our list of best cars around $15,000.

2018 Honda Fit

The Honda Fit tops the list for its combination of fuel economy, interior space and equipment.

“Perhaps nothing else on the market gets more interior space out of its exterior footprint, offering genuine adult-friendly back seat space and a cargo capacity that rivals that of small SUVs,” said Christopher McGraw, senior producer at Autoblog.

The base manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $16,190, but you can spice it up and still stay under the $20,000 mark.

2018 Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is a subcompact SUV (oxymoron, I know) that starts at $16,200. Autoblog said it’s arguably more appealing than many subcompact models in this price range.

For $20,400 you can get a souped up model with a more powerful engine, fog lights and heated mirrors.

“It’s hard to get more style, practicality and feature content at this price point,” said McGraw.

2018 Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza is available as a sedan and a hatchback. It’s a well-rounded compact car that’s comfortable and offers all-wheel drive as standard. It starts at $18,495, and Autoblog named it one of the best new family cars introduced for 2017.

“It’s not a powerhouse, but it is comfortable, handles well and has an excellent touchscreen tech interface,” said McGraw.

The all-wheel drive as standard gives the Impreza a clear leg up on its competition if you live where things can get slippery.

2018 Mazda 3

We admit the Mazda 3 is more desirable at a higher price point where it benefits from “near-luxury levels of equipment and a more powerful engine,” said McGraw. But the base sport model, with an MSRP right at $20,110, is still one hell of a car.

“It is one of our favorite compact cars to drive, as it possesses excellent steering and handling, along with a responsive four-cylinder engine that achieves thrifty fuel economy.” said McGraw.

You can even get a sweet manual transmission.

2018 Nissan Rogue Sport

The Nissan Rogue Sport isn’t on anyone’s list of best-looking SUVs, but it still delivers a lot for a base price of $21,640. It’s small on the outside, but it doesn’t feel that way on the inside. It may not be as big as the regular Nissan Rogue, but it’s far from small.

“The front of the cabin is basically identical to the regular Rogue. The space savings come in the second row and cargo area,” Autoblog wrote in a review of the 2017 model.

If you don’t need max cargo space but you want an SUV that’s maneuverable, the Rogue Sport may be a better choice than its big brother.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu

We told you we couldn’t just choose five. Our bonus car on the list is the Chevy Malibu, which comes with more tech standard than the other cars here: alloy wheels, keyless push-button start, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G LTE wifi.

With a base price of $21,680, it touches the upper end of our range for $20,000 cars.

The slightly upgraded LS trim level costs $23,225 and comes with a rearview camera and a Teen Driver feature that can track misbehavior of young drivers.
