These Are the U.S. Cities to Visit in January, Based on the Best Flight Prices

Once the holidays are over, a certain fatigue sets in after countless parties and cooking. But the good news is that January is one of the most affordable months to travel, or so the flight booking site Hipmunk says, thanks to their new “When To Go” tool. Flying to popular destinations in January versus December or February will save travelers up to 31 percent, Hipmunk found. Five cities—some snowy, some sunny—offered the best savings on flights during the first month of the year. Whether you're looking to sit by a pool in Florida or hit the slopes in Colorado, the data says to use 2019's allotted vacation days ASAP.

1. Cincinnati ($223 median, 48 percent savings on peak price) There's plenty to explore in this Ohio city, from shopping in the Over-the-Rhine district—Continuum is a favorite stop—to spending the day at Taft's Ale House. The Smale Riverfront Park offers outdoor time, but when the going gets tough (a.k.a. the temperatures continue to drop) head to one of Cincinnati's many museums.

2. Palm Springs ($370 median, 37 percent savings on peak price) If you're looking for a warmer weekend getaway, Palm Springs might be a good place to start. You'll be met with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine, art, and historic homes. Take a trip to breathtaking Sunnylands’ house and gardens, hike through Joshua Tree, and browse Palm Springs Art Museum during your time in the desert. Plus a breakfast burrito at La Copine is never a bad idea.

Orlando, Florida

3. Orlando ($235 median, 36 percent savings on peak price) Florida is an easy getaway for anyone on the East Coast—we're talking less than three hours via plane from Manhattan. For those feeling nostalgic, Disney World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are worth a stop. Or, steer clear—and spend your time soaking up the sun by the rooftop pool at the Grand Bohemian Hotel.

4. Las Vegas ($259 median, 34 percent savings on peak price) Skip celebrating New Year's Eve in Las Vegas and fly later in the month for discounted fares. It’s the perfect time to go: Lady Gaga has just started her residency, the NoMad hotel just opened a Las Vegas location (with its first-ever NoMad Casino), and a set of new restaurants are making a good impression on Sin City. You can skip the clubs and still have a fabulous time.

Denver, Colorado

5. Denver ($202 median, 33 percent savings on peak price) Haven't had the chance to ski this year? A flight to Denver gets you that much closer to the Rockies (Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen to name a few places). Or, stay in the snowy city and spend your time exploring the food and drink scene (Denver Central Market is worth a visit), or browsing the growing arts district.
