Consider the following scenario: You're trapped on a desert island and only permitted to bring along one beauty product. What would it be? A quick poll around the Vogue offices this week revealed that the overwhelming answer was (no surprise!) mascara. Leaving home without it, even in the age of no-makeup-makeup, is simply unthinkable. Fortunately, there’s a new crop of formulas that promises to supersize even naturally fine lashes in just a few inky strokes.

Chanel's breakthrough wand is the result of a first-of-its-kind 3D printing process that arranges each bristle in a microfine pattern for maximum volume and definition, while depositing black pigment right at the roots—meaning eyeliner is somewhat optional. Maybelline's cult classic Falsies has been reformulated with pro-keratin fibers that coat each lash for an amplified, so-good-they-look-fake shape. If smudges or raccoon eyes are your problem, on the other hand, Eyeko's new waterproof 'Yoga' formula, named for its flexible, ultra stretch fibers, provides serious heft without clumps.

But it’s safe to say that François Nars may have given particular consideration to the stranded-without-mascara scenario: The legendary makeup artist, who owns an idyllic private isle in French Polynesia, just launched his cheekily named Climax mascara—equipped with a moisturizing complex that delivers a soft whipped formula and blacker-than-black shade that lives up to its name. With that kind of drama, you won’t be alone on the island for long.
