Despite the fact that women dominate the US beauty consumer market and new female-owned brands are popping up left and right, the dominant beauty companies of the world (the L'Oréals, the MACs, the Shiseidos) are run by men. In fact, of the S&P 500 companies, only 4.6% of the CEOs are women. And in WWD's report of the 100 biggest beauty brands of 2018, only 10 were run female CEOs. In the big picture, the glass ceiling has yet to be cracked, but granularly, it's empowering to see how many beauty companies support women both stateside and abroad through programs and monetary donations. So while we still have a ways to go before we dominate the C-suite, it's comforting to know that the steadily booming beauty industry is lifting women up from a philanthropic perspective, and, given that it's International Women's Day, there's no time like the present to highlight the brands that are giving back.
