Following on the heels of Homelessness Action Week, hundreds will gather at Tenth Church this weekend to discuss what we can do about people sleeping on our streets, and about the stratospheric costs of housing affecting the middle class. As we head to the polls for municipal elections, this is a key election issue. There is some good news to celebrate, for the number of people sleeping outside has dropped significantly. However, housing costs haven't.
Dr. Brian Walsh, co-author of Beyond Homelessness: Christian Faith in a Culture of Displacement will deliver keynote addresses exploring some challenging questions. Is it enough to provide low and moderate income people with housing, or do we all need more... a community to belong to and a way to contribute? What are some of the best examples for housing that really works for people?
Responding to Walsh's ideas with their own experiences and expertise will be an impressive panel including Mayor Gregor Robertson, Mayor Peter Fassbender, Dick Vollet from Streetohome Foundation and Craig Crawford from BC Housing.
Though faith-based organizations provide much of the shelter and housing in the province, they don't do it alone. This 1 1/2 day forum will continue the work of the first two conferences held in 2006 and 2008. It is an opportunity to inspire the Christian community, agencies, and governments with what is possible through partnerships within the Church and beyond.
Judy Graves, Housing Advocate, City of Vancouver comments, "The solution to homelessness, is housing. The solution to malnutrition is good food."
