Results: Net income for the gas utilities company fell to $38.7 million (49 cents per share) vs. $71.7 million (92 cents per share) a year earlier. This is a decline of 46% from the year-earlier quarter.

Revenue: Fell 12% to $1.13 billion from the year-earlier quarter.

Actual vs. Wall St. Expectations: Integrys Energy Group Inc. reported adjusted net income of $1.01 per share. By that measure, the company beat the mean estimate of 97 cents per share. It fell short of the average revenue estimate of $1.74 billion.

Quoting Management: I am pleased with our improved adjusted earnings,” said Charles A. Schrock, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Integrys Energy Group. “Our fourth quarter 2011 diluted EPS – adjusted results were up 23 percent and our full year 2011 results were up about eight percent when compared with the same periods in 2010. This demonstrates that the execution of our business strategy is yielding anticipated financial results.”

Revenue has fallen in the past four quarters. Revenue declined 5.9% to $938.7 million in the third quarter. The figure fell 0.4% in the second quarter from the year earlier and dropped 14.5% in the first quarter from the year-ago quarter.

The company beat estimates last quarter after meeting expectations in the third quarter with net income of 43 cents per share.

Looking Forward: Analysts appear increasingly negative about the company’s results for the next quarter. The average estimate for the first quarter of the next fiscal year has moved down from $1.63 a share to $1.62 over the last ninety days. Over the past sixty days, the average estimate for the fiscal year has reached $3.36 abs per share, a decline from $3.37.
