Abbott brands, Organic Valley among drinks added to recall for possible contamination
Last month’s recall of protein drinks and other nutritional supplement drinks on microbial contamination concerns now includes 10 other brands of protein drinks, milks and smoothies, some of which are designed for children.
Also, more products or lot numbers and expiration dates have been added to some of the brands in the original recall, such as Premier Protein, MRE and Oatly.

Two of the brands in the expansion (Ensure Harvest, PediaSure Harvest) and one brand in the original recall (Glucerna Original) come from Abbott Nutrition, the same Abbott Nutrition of the national baby formula formula crisis after an infant and tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii.
Although cronobacter fears were the reason for the original recall in this case, Lyons Magnus is the manufacturer making the products for its own Lyons brands, the three Abbott brands and all the other brands now included in this recall.
And, in addition to Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria, the recall notice by Lyons brought up the deadly bacteria Clostridium botulinum that causes botulism.
“Although Clostridium botulinum has not been found in products, consumers are warned not to consume any of the recalled products even if they do not look or smell spoiled,” the Lyons-written, FDA-posted recall expansion notice said. “While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.”
As for what happened, Lyons said, “Root cause analysis indicates that the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications.”
