ABB's Services for UK Wind Farm
ABB Ltd (ABB) has recently received a contract for developing grid connection and providing supporting infrastructure for U.K.-based Vattenfall’s Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project. This wind farm is one of the largest onshore production facilities in England and Wales. The financial value of the deal was not disclosed.
This wind farm scheduled to be operational in 2016 will consist of 76 turbines, having a production capacity of 228 megawatts electricity. The scope of the contract entails ABB to provide core components of the project including design and construction of a couple of new substations and a set of equipment supplies for supporting the stability of grid voltage.
These include a compact 132 kilovolt (kV) PASS (Plug And Switch System), hybrid switchgear and STATCOM (Voltage Source Converter based reactive power compensation) units.
Additionally, ABB will also provide supply transfers to increase the voltage gradually from 33kV to 400kV that will be transmitted to the National Electricity Transmission System. The two substations will be connected with a 9.2 km underground wire. They will also have IEC 61850 substation automation.
This wind farm is expected to support the increasing demand for power in a reliable way by effective use of transmission grid. These two substations are at the core of the whole system, facilitating safe and secure transmission of power along with deft management of the voltage levels. The substations are so designed that their equipment will be protecting and controlling the flow of power across the grid.
