African trio Abdul Rahman Baba, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Nabil Bentaleb were all in action on Saturday as FC Schalke secured a 1-1 draw against FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga to earn first away point of the season.
Despite being pegged back twelve minutes after taking the lead, the Royal Blues managed to escape with a point at the WWK Arena.
Back from midweek international duty with Ghana, Baba was restored in the starting line-up after starting the Royal Blues’ previous two matches on the bench, and the full-back was one of Schalke’s standout performers on the day.
After his man of the match display during the 4-0 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach before the recent international break, Choupo-Moting kept his place in Markus Weinzierl’s starting lineup. The Cameroonian international continued from where he left off as he was the architect of Schalke’s only goal.
The 27-year-old teed up Algeria’s Bentaleb, who rifled a spectacular effort from outside the area into the back of a net for his first goal for Schalke since arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of the season.
Choupo-Moting was an unused substitute for Cameroon when they visited Bentaleb’s native Algeria at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida for the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers at the weekend. Bentaleb was suspended and did not play for the Greens, who were held to a draw.
Despite the point, Schalke remain in the relegation playoff spot after taking just four points from their opening seven fixtures. They host Mainz next weekend as they look to climb up the table.
