Academy Sports and Outdoors' (NASDAQ:ASO) earnings growth rate lags the 25% return delivered to shareholders

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. To wit, the Academy Sports and Outdoors, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASO) share price is 24% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 23% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

While the stock has fallen 5.3% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Academy Sports and Outdoors grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 7.3%. The share price gain of 24% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

A Different Perspective

Academy Sports and Outdoors shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 25% over the last twelve months, including dividends. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 12% in the last three months. Demand for the stock from multiple parties is pushing the price higher; it could be that word is getting out about its virtues as a business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Academy Sports and Outdoors better, we need to consider many other factors.
