On a per-share basis, the Columbus, Ohio-based company said it had profit of $1.10.
The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.15 per share.
The utility posted revenue of $4.1 billion in the period.
AEP expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.55 to $3.68 per share.
AEP shares have climbed 17 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed 15 percent. The stock has climbed 16 percent in the last 12 months.
