Aflac beats 3Q profit forecasts

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) _ Aflac Inc. (AFL) on Wednesday reported third-quarter profit of $716 million.

On a per-share basis, the Columbus, Georgia-based company said it had net income of $1.80. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.70 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.62 per share.

The insurer posted revenue of $5.51 billion in the period.

For the current quarter ending in December, Aflac expects its per-share earnings to range from $1.42 to $1.66. Analysts surveyed by Zacks had forecast adjusted earnings per share of $1.55.

The company expects full-year earnings in the range of $6.62 to $6.86 per share.

Aflac shares have climbed 21 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen 14 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $84.07, a climb of 21 percent in the last 12 months.
