Al-Jazeera: Crew held for 3 days in Niger after govt says they failed to get accreditation
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- The Al-Jazeera network says a team of its journalists have been held for three days in eastern Niger where they had gone to film a news story.
The Qatar-owned network said they are not currently charged with any crime, yet remain detained in harsh conditions after they were arrested in the town of Zinder.
Niger's Justice Minister Marou Amadou told The Associated Press that Al-Jazeera had failed to get the proper accreditation, which includes not just a visa but also an authorization from the ministry of communication.
Amadou says the correspondent, camera operator and producer had gotten their visas in Kano, Nigeria. He says they went straight to work without getting press accreditation in Niger's capital, which he said was illegal.
