Al Roker will undergo hip replacement surgery: I'm 'slowly replacing this body'

The "Today" show is wishing Al Roker a speedy recovery.

The show's 65-year-old weather anchor and co-host revealed that he will undergo hip replacement surgery Wednesday after pain in his left hip abruptly flared up.

"All of a sudden, I started feeling this twinge in my hip – and then my back was acting up,” Roker said on Today Tuesday. "It seems like my hip went fairly quickly."

Roker said he's having hip resurfacing surgery to alleviate pain caused by osteoarthritis, which, according to Mayo Clinic, occurs when cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down.

"In the last three months, my left hip has been deteriorating and I decided, let me go get it taken care of," he said, adding that he's not in excruciating pain or "crying at night, but, you know, it hurts."

The weatherman made light of his upcoming procedure, saying, "My sister Lisa is having both of her (hips) done so we got a family plan going." He jokingly added, "I'm getting my hip replaced on Groupon."

The cracks did not stop there. Roker said he's "slowly replacing this body."

In 2016, Roker returned to work weeks after having his second knee replacement. In 2018, he had emergency carpal tunnel surgery and returned the next day.

"Only Roker has surgery yesterday and comes in today and is going to be on Broadway Friday," Hoda Kotb said in October 2018, referring to his debut as Joe in the Broadway musical "Waitress."

But for his hip replacement surgery he expects to be out a little longer. Roker told his colleagues he hopes to be back on television, barring "no complications" ...two Mondays from now."

The "Today" show – which will document Roker's hip surgery journey – tweeted: "Sending our love and well-wishes to @alroker  ahead of his hip replacement surgery."
