Alico (NASDAQ:ALCO) Shareholders Booked A 36% Gain In The Last Three Years

In this article:

Buying a low-cost index fund will get you the average market return. But if you invest in individual stocks, some are likely to underperform. For example, the Alico, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALCO) share price return of 36% over three years lags the market return in the same period. Having said that, the 21% increase over the past year is good to see.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Alico achieved compound earnings per share growth of 82% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 7.10.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Alico the TSR over the last 3 years was 39%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Alico provided a TSR of 22% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 7.1% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing.
