What’s new on Amazon Prime Video and what’s leaving in August 2019

Rick Marshall

Each month, Amazon adds a healthy dose of fresh content, providing viewers with a significant number of new and interesting things to watch. With so much new stuff, it can be hard to know what to watch without doing extensive research. There’s no need to fear, streaming enthusiasts and Amazon Fire TV owners: If you’re looking for the best of what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in August, we’re here to help.

On the series front, Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne lead Carnival Row, a new Prime original set in a Victorian fantasy world where magical creatures live alongside humans. When a human detective and a faerie violate the restrictions on how mythological beings mingle with humans, it threatens the peace of their world.

It’s called “soccer” in the U.S. (for some silly reason), but the global impact of the sport known to the rest of the world as football is the focus of the very appropriately titled This is Football, a six-part original documentary from Amazon Studios. The series explores the emotional resonance of the world’s most popular sport, traveling from lesser-known football locales such as Delhi and Rwanda to some of the most high-profile football fandoms on Earth in its investigation of what makes people so passionate about the sport.

There are also plenty of other new and noteworthy movies and television series not produced in-house that will be available to Amazon Prime subscribers in August. Among the highlights is the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as well as the dark crime comedy A Simple Favor, giant-monster spectacle Godzilla, and the courthouse thriller The Lincoln Lawyer.

Below, you’ll find the full list of everything that’s new on Amazon Prime Video in both July and August, with our recommended films and shows in boldface. If you’re still not sure what to watch, we have a list of the best movies streaming on Amazon, as well as a list of the best TV shows streaming on Amazon, to help you make an informed choice.
