The warehouse where the worker is believed to have died.
A worker has died at what Amazon tells us is a third-party package sorting facility in the New York metropolitan area. AllThingsD reported the news:
The accident occurred on December 4 at an Amazon fulfillment center in Avenel, N.J., according to an incident report on the website of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
“The victim was caught in between and crushed by equipment,” Leni Uddyback-Fortson, a regional director with the Department of Labor’s Office of Public Affairs told AllThingsD in an email. She declined to provide additional information, noting that OSHA was still investigating the accident.
The Avenel facility was previously believed to be a warehouse for Amazon's AmazonFresh grocery delivery facility. A company spokesperson tells Business Insider that is not the case.
The worker is the second to die recently in an Amazon warehouse. Another worker, not directly employed by Amazon, was crushed to death by a forklift at a warehouse in Reno, Nev., in November, according to local media.
Amazon told ATD: "We’re very saddened and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.”
Correction: This story initially said the New Jersey worker was an Amazon employee at an AmazonFresh warehouse. It has been corrected to indicate the worker was not directly employed by Amazon, and that the facility is a third-party site that does work for Amazon.
