Amazon Will Raise the Price of Its Amazon Prime Service from $79 to $99 Per Year

image

Amazon Prime just got a little more pricey.

On Thursday morning, Amazon announced that it would hike the price of its Amazon Prime service from $79 to $99. It’s the first price increase for Amazon Prime since the service was introduced in 2005.

Prime is an annual subscription that gives customers free two-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items on Amazon.com, as well as access to Amazon’s Instant Video service. Amazon had previously suggested in a conference call with investors that it would bump the price of Prime by as much as $40 to combat rising fuel prices.

So if you’re looking for some bright side out of this news, well, at least Prime doesn’t cost $129 per year.

Existing Prime subscribers should have received an email from Amazon informing them of the change. For those subscribers, the price change will take effect on April 17, 2014; so if you happen to be up for renewal before then, your Prime will cost $79 for another year. If not, then the next time you’re charged for Prime, the price will be $99.
