Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD recently announced availability of the much-awaited second generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX desktop processor.

The company also announced the availability of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X processor featuring 32 threads and 16 cores from Aug 31, 2018. Meanwhile, AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X and 2970WX models are scheduled to be made available in October 2018.

The new Ryzen Threadripper processor is developed on 12nm Zen+ architecture. The chip is touted to be the highest-end chip featuring a whopping 32 cores and 64 threads, per PC Gamer. Higher core count of Threadripper 2990WX is expected to boost the competitive position of AMD against Intel INTC in the high-end desktop market (“HEDT”) considerably.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and 2970WX are priced at $1,799 and $1,299, respectively, function at 250 W of power. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X and 2920X are priced at $899 and $649, respectively, function at 180 W of power.

Following the news, shares of AMD were up almost 3.5% yesterday. AMD stock has returned 91.9% year to date against industry’s decline of 3.7%.

Enhanced Features Across Major PC Verticals: Key Catalyst

Reportedly, Intel’s yet-to-be released 28-core PC chip recorded up to 5 GHz clock speed under industrial-grade water cooling. Meanwhile, AMD’s 2990WX delivered 5.1 GHz clock speed under liquid nitrogen cooling conditions.

Additionally, per company’s laboratory tests, the new processor offers approximately 53% faster multi-thread performance when compared with nearest contender in the market, Intel’s Core i9-7980XE. Further, the new processor delivers almost 47% more rendering performance over Core i9-7980XE.

In a bid to deliver an enhanced gaming experience AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X offers almost 41% greater multi-threaded performance compared with Core i9-7900X.

The new AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are loaded with robust technologies to enhance experience of the end user. AMD StoreMI technologiesenable the processor deliver SSD-level read speeds. AMD’s 1 MB Store MI configuration has a read performance of 553 MBps allowing PCs to load games, applications and files smoothly.

Notably, Western Digital WDC Black HDD’s 1MB read performance of a 7200 RPM is 139 MBps, while Samsung 850 Pro records 553 MBps.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are compatible with new and existing X399 chipset motherboards. A BIOS update is required to make existing motherboards compatible with the new processors.

To Conclude

With the robust features of Ryzen powered CPUs, AMD is expected to gain a competitive edge in the HEDT market. The company’s new processors’ prospects have been buoyed by the latest data from Gartner and IDC reflecting improving PC shipment.

AMD’s products have been selected by the likes of Cisco CSCO and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. These contracts are helping AMD rapidly penetrate the server market.
