American Public Education: 1Q Earnings Snapshot

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ American Public Education Inc. (APEI) on Tuesday reported first-quarter profit of $1 million.

On a per-share basis, the Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had profit of 6 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 32 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 31 cents per share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $73.4 million in the period.

American Public Education shares have increased 17% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $33.16, a decrease of 15% in the last 12 months.
