American Public Education: 2Q Earnings Snapshot

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ American Public Education Inc. (APEI) on Wednesday reported second-quarter earnings of $6.5 million.

On a per-share basis, the Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had net income of 39 cents.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 33 cents per share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $72.8 million in the period.

American Public Education shares have risen 73 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $43.45, more than doubling in the last 12 months.
