The Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had net income of 42 cents per share.
The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 44 cents per share.
The for-profit education company posted revenue of $78.6 million in the period.
For the year, the company reported profit of $24.2 million, or $1.49 per share. Revenue was reported as $313.1 million.
American Public Education shares have dropped roughly 2 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $24.15, a climb of 57 percent in the last 12 months.
