'America's Got Talent' shuts down production following contestant Jonathan Goodwin's failed stunt

·2 min read

"America's Got Talent: Extreme" is pausing production after stuntman and contestant Jonathan Goodwin was hospitalized after suffering injuries from a daredevil stunt.

During Thursday's rehearsal for the "America's Got Talent" spin-off, an accident occurred while Goodwin performed his act, an "America's Got Talent" spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY Friday. Goodwin is continuing to receive medical care after being immediately hospitalized following the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Jonathan Goodwin and his family as he continues to recover from his accident on Thursday. In order to focus on the wellbeing of our crew, we will be temporarily pausing production on America’s Got Talent: Extreme and will resume the last few days of filming at a later date. The health and safety of our cast and crew continue to be our priority.”

A famed escapologist and daredevil, Goodwin is known for his dangerous stunts and refers to himself as the world's "greatest theatrical stunt performer" in his Instagram bio. He is currently competing on "America's Got Talent: Extreme," hosted by WWE superstar Nikki Bella, rally car driver Travis Pastrana and Simon Cowell. Terry Crews will be the host.

Previously, he competed in Season 15 of "America's Got Talent" in 2020 and made headlines with his quarterfinals act. He was eliminated during the semifinals.

'AGT': Howie Mandel calls medic after Jonathan Goodwin catches fire during daredevil act

In what judges called a "scary" act, Goodwin doused himself in oil and attempted to escape padlocks and shackles with his vision impaired in under 20 seconds while flames closed in on him. To raise the stakes, this was Goodwin's first time attempting the escape act.

"Do they have a medic here?" Sofía Vergara asked at the time. "I don’t want to see this."

Goodwin caught fire before successfully escaping and being extinguished. At one point during the act, Howie Mandel called for help: "He’s on fire, somebody move in… Why is everybody just standing there?"

When the coast was clear and Goodwin emerged unharmed, Mandel joked, "Well done. See what I did there with the fire?" Heidi Klum added, "How can you say anything negative to a man who puts himself on fire for us?"
