AOC Encounters an Excited Dog That Loves the Green New Deal

In a 9-second video so adorable it was clearly dreamed up by an algorithm that just wants us to be happy, media darling congressperson Alexadria Ocasio-Cortez was given a thousand nummy smooches by an excited dog that had just done some reading on the Green New Deal.

The video from the past summer and tweeted by a former staffer (sometimes leaks are good???) shows AOC seated on a grate, on a call, and being lovingly attacked by Charlie, a moderate Democrat dog who works in HR at a tech startup in Williamsburg and says his main concerns are "the environment, obvi, the thing about the taxes, and more walks."

Surprisingly, there's a lot to unpack here. It's nice to see that, just like all of us, AOC ends up on conference calls in the worst possible places to have conference calls. Is this modern living: sitting on the ground on a spot that, statistically, there has been pee, with earbuds in, engaging in business and deals like a late stage capitalism Don Draper? Apparently!

I love that AOC is so "one of us" that she didn't reserve a suite at The Wing or a hammock at WeWork, but decided that Grate In The Bronx is the perfect place for the wheels of a political sea change to start turning. Someone put a historical marker up! Or a commemorative public art installation. I will personally fundraise for Great Grate Gate.

Ocasio-Cortez is so frequently in the news doing interesting things or smacking down trolls on Twitter like a Jedi trained by Chrissy Teigen herself, it's almost hard to believe it's all genuine. This video is sort of masterpiece of coordination. She's managing to keep her earbud in her ear and to keep her green juice from falling over while being loved fiercely by a medium-sized dog. This video has the same energy as the photos of Rihanna walking over grates in stilettos. Unreal.

But, as we are aware, dogs don't lie. If she's genuine enough for Charlie, she's good enough for me. Nevertheless, sometimes AOC seems like an AOC character in an earnest mid-90s underdog film starring Marissa Tomei. In this scene, the blustery incumbent she's running against (played by Val Kilmer) has just forced her out of the community center in which she wanted to hold a listening session. She thinks quickly, knowing this is perhaps her only chance to reach out to a single teen mom who wrote her a letter (Jennie Garth). AOC marches out of the building in a huff and declares to her very hot chief of staff (Sendhil Ramamurthy in his first role) "We're taking this to the streets!" Cue montage!

After news of the video spread, pundits on Fox were quick to decry the "partisanship of dogs," with one of the Friends from Fox & Friends posing the question "Are dogs socialist?" When reached for comment Charlie said simply, "They're barking up the wrong tree."
