With a fifth of dogs and cats ending up at the emergency vets in December, some animal lovers are decorating a bit differently this year by opting for a Christmas tree trend that's pet-proof... and a bit quirky.

Portal Christmas trees are gaining in popularity on Instagram. They feature the bottom two thirds of an artificial tree attached to the ceiling, with the other third attached to the floor. The design is meant to mimic a tree passing through a portal.

Some pet owners have even taken the concept one step further, attaching both trees to the ceiling to stop their dogs and cats (and foxes) knocking the decorations off.

Portal Christmas trees have actually been around since 2012, but a Reddit user reignited the unusual trend by sharing this photo of their tree surrounded by red and blue lights.

And while traditionalists have been left confused rather than convinced, it sure beats a costly visit to the vets on Christmas Day.

Pulling down ornaments, knocking over the Christmas tree and eating decorations were the top three festive doggy misdemeanours, according to a new survey by Co-op Pet Insurance.
