Investing.com – Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) has hogged most of the headlines as the streaming wars intensify, casting a shadow over Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), but new data shows that Apple TV+ racked in more subscribers than Disney+ in the fourth quarter.

Apple TV+ added 33.6 million U.S. subscribers in the fourth quarter, short of Netflix's 61.3 million and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Prime Video's 42 million, but ahead of the Disney+ figure of 23.2 million. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.2%.

Despite launching a nearly two weeks before Disney+, AppleTV+ is still playing catch-up, and made its debut with only 11 series or movies available for streaming.

Some suggest that Apple's impressive subscriber addition should be taken with a grain of salt as the strength of its streaming offering will be put to the test when the free one-year trial expires.

Under the current promotion, Apple TV+ subscribers are on a one-year free trial included with the purchase of any iPhone, iPad, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) TV, iPod touch, or Mac after Sept. 10, 2019.

Disney+, meanwhile, will likely see a wave of subscribers in the not-too-distant future with its launch in Europe on March 24.
