NEW YORK (AP) _ Assurant Inc. (AIZ) on Tuesday reported third-quarter net income of $53 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The New York-based company said it had net income of 76 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.06 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1 per share.

The insurer posted revenue of $2.27 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.26 billion.

Assurant shares have decreased roughly 3 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased 3 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $98.15, a fall of 1 percent in the last 12 months.
