In this article:

For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. Don't believe it? Then look at the Atkore Inc. (NYSE:ATKR) share price. It's 413% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It's also good to see the share price up 16% over the last quarter.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Atkore achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 104% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 39% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 9.84 also suggests market apprehension.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Atkore shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 247% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 39% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Atkore is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
