Avantor (NYSE:AVTR) Shareholders Have Enjoyed A 52% Share Price Gain

These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the Avantor, Inc. (NYSE:AVTR) share price is 52% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 20% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! We'll need to follow Avantor for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

We don't think that Avantor's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

In the last year Avantor saw its revenue grow by 2.3%. That's not great considering the company is losing money. The modest growth is probably largely reflected in the share price, which is up 52%. That's not a standout result, but it is solid - much like the level of revenue growth. It could be worth keeping an eye on this one, especially if growth accelerates.

Avantor is well known by investors, and plenty of clever analysts have tried to predict the future profit levels. Given we have quite a good number of analyst forecasts, it might be well worth checking out this free chart depicting consensus estimates.

A Different Perspective

Avantor boasts a total shareholder return of 52% for the last year. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 18% in the last three months. Demand for the stock from multiple parties is pushing the price higher; it could be that word is getting out about its virtues as a business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Avantor (at least 1 which is a bit concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
