Consumer research company Nielsen has released its latest Games 360 report, which reveals data and statistics on the video games and esports industries.

The 2017 Nielsen Games 360 report profiles esports fans based in the United States. According to the report 77 percent of esports fans are male, and 94 percent of esports fans are “active gamers”.

The largest group of esports fans are reportedly in the 25-34 age bracket, with their average age being 31. The alleged second-largest age bracket is the 18-24 range, making up 26 percent of esports fans.

Fans who have become interested in the scene in the last year were allegedly brought in via friends or family, while fans who have been around for more than four years were initially drawn in via interest in a specific game.

The report’s focus on growth is unsurprising, given the number of high-profile investments in esports as of late. Recently Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick spoke about the company’s ambitions for Overwatch League, saying that it was aiming for NBA and NFL-sized revenues. In March this year esports organization Cloud9 announced it had completed a Series A financing round, with backers including San Francisco 49ers Hall of Famer Joe Montana, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence, and NBA center Andrew Bogut.
