The Average Gas Price in Every State

Jordan Rosenfeld

Gas prices are as changeable as the weather, and their fluctuations can make a huge difference in the budget of the average American family. So, understanding the economics behind these price changes might help you make smarter decisions at your local gas station.

Overall, prices are determined by the cost of crude oil and how the supply of gasoline stands in relation to demand. In other words, gas costs more when a greater number of people are using it. Demand for gasoline depends on the time of year: Prices tend to increase slowly in the spring and peak in the summer when people are vacationing and taking road trips, and they fall when winter comes back around.

Spikes in gasoline prices can also result from disruptions in the production and supply process, such as accidents at refineries or setbacks in gas pipeline deliveries. While suppliers maintain an inventory — known as stocks — to keep gas flowing when unexpected events occur, sometimes those stocks get used up faster than anticipated, which causes prices to rise.

The national average for gas prices is $2.60 per gallon as of Aug. 22, 2019, but the final price you pay might be drastically higher — or lower — depending on the state that you live in. For example, gas costs $3.58 per gallon in California, whereas it’s just $2.35 per gallon in Texas. To help you figure out the average in your state, GOBankingRates compiled state gas price averages from AAA and ranked each state from the most expensive to the least.

While consumers can’t control gasoline prices, you can make the most of your tank by adjusting your habits at the pump. For example, according to AAA, there’s very little benefit to buying expensive, premium gasoline unless your car’s manufacturer recommends it. Additionally, you can find the cheapest gas in your area by performing a quick search in mobile apps like GasBuddy.
