But those costs can vary depending on where people live in the United States. In Seattle, San Francisco and the New York City borough of Brooklyn, food costs at least 30 percent more than the national average, according to a report from Rent.com. The report looked at data from the Council for Community and Economic Research’s Cost of Living Index which compares the price of supermarket staples like coffee, eggs and milk.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST OF A GROCERY BILL FOR A FAMILY OF 4?

The average American spends 9.9 percent of their disposable income on food — 5.2 percent is spent on groceries and 4.7 percent is spent on restaurants and meals on the go, according to the USDA. And it's more expensive to eat healthy food. As much as 97 percent of counties in the United States are home to people who can't afford or don't have access to healthy food, according to a study released last year by Feeding America, a Chicago-based nonprofit that works with food banks.
