Awkwafina Responds to Disney's Live-Action "The Little Mermaid" Casting Rumors

The past two months have been filled with rumors surrounding the cast of Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid. Of course, we all know Halle Bailey is set to play the lead role of Ariel, which couldn't be more exciting. But who will be her dashing Prince Eric? Who will play Ursula? (My vote is still with Lizzo, but I digress.) Who will take us under the sea as the witty crab Sebastian? While no actors besides Halle have been confirmed to date, there have been plenty of speculation about who might round out the fantastical cast.

Earlier this summer, Entertainment Weekly reported that Awkwafina was in talks to take on the role of Scuttle in the upcoming adaptation. Early reports also named Melissa McCarthy and Jacob Tremblay as being in the running to join the cast.

On Saturday, August 24, while promoting her new film Raya and the Last Dragon at the D23 Expo in California, Awkwafina was asked about the possible casting, telling Entertainment Tonight: "Aww man, that all isn't confirmed yet, but obviously if it happens, I would be more than honored."

Good job not spilling the tea — or sea water — Awkwafina. The actor went on to add, "It's a classic, yeah. I'm very, very happy. That's my princess right there, so I'm very happy with what they have [announced] so far."

So while we still have no confirmation on whether or not Awkwafina will be donning a pair of seagull wings, it appears as though it's definitely in the cards — although we don't want to get our hopes up. Let's not forget our devastation at thinking the one and only Harry Styles would be playing Prince Eric, only to learn later that he actually turned down the role (Disney, have you contacted Shawn Mendes yet? Just sayin'.)

However the casting ends up, at least we know Halle will be living her best life as the Disney princess she deserves to be, and that's truly all we could ask for!
