A firmwide gift of $5,000 pushed Baker & Hostetler into the upper echelon of the Legal Food Frenzy fundraising competition in Atlanta.

The firm jumped over four teams to land in third place and is nipping at the heels of Georgia Tech's legal office. Tech set the pace early in the two-week event but was overtaken Tuesday by Joe S. Habachy's practice, which maintained the lead.

Expect a lot of action Thursday and Friday, the final two days of the event, as teams push for $131,000 in food bank donations to reach the Atlanta goal of $300,000.

Atlanta Community Food Bank and its counterparts around the state can turn each $1 donated into four meals for the hundreds of thousands of people who don’t know how they’ll get their next meal.

The Atlanta food bank reports that 819,000 people in the 29 counties around the city meet the standard for “food insecure.” One in five children in the state live in that category.

The Top 10 team teams in Atlanta were, as of 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday:

  • Joe S. Habachy PC (captain Joe Habachy), $14,530;

  • Georgia Institute of Technology Office of Legal Affairs (captains Susann D. Estroff and Kate Wasch), $12,785;

  • Baker & Hostetler (Emily Spiller), $11,215;

  • King & Spalding (no captain listed), $9,333;

  • Troutman Sanders (James Stevens), $6,966;

  • Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton (Karen Robinson-Salley and Jennifer Deal), $6,720;

  • Serta Simmons (Lynn Carrico), $6,125;

  • Alston & Bird (Cheryl Naja), $5,655;

  • Office of Attorney General (Katelyn Byrd), $4,882;

  • Lueder, Larkin & Hunter (Cynthia Hodge), $3,878;

The next 10 teams saw a lot of movement Wednesday, ending at this lineup:

  • Moore Ingram Johnson & Steele (Leslie Neubauer), $3,415.

  • Squire Patton Boggs (Deborah Lempogo), $3,358;

  • McGuireWoods (Elizabeth Arnettt Buckley), $3,280;

  • Arnall Golden Gregory (Winifred Rice), $3,140;

  • Hudson Parrott Walker (Laura Desautel), $2,875;

  • Fisher & Phillips (Katherine Sottile), $2,820;

  • Taylor English Duma (Jonathan Boros), $2,691;

The event is co-sponsored by Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr—who has challenged lawyers to donate the price of one billable hour—the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia and the Georgia Food Banks Association.
