Banca IFIS S.p.A. (BIT:IF) Analysts Just Slashed This Year's Estimates

Simply Wall St

Today is shaping up negative for Banca IFIS S.p.A. (BIT:IF) shareholders, with the analysts delivering a substantial negative revision to this year's forecasts. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as the analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.

Following the latest downgrade, Banca IFIS' three analysts currently expect revenues in 2020 to be €456m, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are supposed to nosedive 61% to €0.88 in the same period. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €512m and earnings per share (EPS) of €1.48 in 2020. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a large cut to earnings per share numbers as well.

It'll come as no surprise then, to learn that the analysts have cut their price target 24% to €10.65. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Banca IFIS at €12.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at €10.00. The narrow spread of estimates could suggest that the business' future is relatively easy to value, or that the analysts have a clear view on its prospects.

These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the Banca IFIS' past performance and to peers in the same industry. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with the forecast 1.6% revenue decline a notable change from historical growth of 9.5% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 7.7% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Banca IFIS is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Banca IFIS' revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. Given the scope of the downgrades, it would not be a surprise to see the market become more wary of the business.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have estimates - from multiple Banca IFIS analysts - going out to 2022, and you can see them free on our platform here.
