DC fans are still collecting themselves after hearing that Robert Pattinson could be in line to play The Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' The Batman – and now he's been tipped to come up against two iconic villains in the film.

Written and directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), the forthcoming movie is rumoured to have nabbed Robert Pattinson for the lead role of Batman, following Ben Affleck bowing out.

And, it appears yet more exciting rumours about the movie are on the horizon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film may also introduce classic DC villain The Penguin to the Worlds of DC for the first time.

The villain - also known as Oswald Cobblepot - is known in the comic universe for wearing a tuxedo and top hat, with his usual weapon of choice being his enhanced umbrella.

He's yet to appear in the Worlds of DC film universe, though he did feature in the Gotham TV series, where he was portrayed by Robin Lord-Taylor.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves is preparing to reunite The Penguin with Catwoman for the solo movie, which will reportedly feature "around half-a-dozen villains".

This will of course bring back memories of Tim Burton's Batman Returns, which saw Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer give iconic performances in the roles of the two villains.

Nothing has officially been confirmed yet, but the possibility of a Penguin and Catwoman appearance follows a similar push by DC rivals Marvel to bring some more classic villains to the big screen.

In July, Marvel's own super-villain Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) will make his MCU debut in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

So, it seems the time has come for classic comic villains to finally have their cinematic moment.

The Batman is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.
