Battlestar Galactica showrunner making new space drama for Apple TV·Entertainment Weekly

The innovator behind Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica and Starz’ Outlander is returning to space.

Apple TV has ordered a scripted drama series from Ronald D. Moore. The untitled project explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended — which admittedly is a pretty vague description, but that’s all we’ve got for now.

Moore famously totally reinvigorated the space opera with Syfy’s BSG (pictured above), something that no TV series has managed to pull off since. Moore cut his teeth in the genre by working on Star Trek shows, particularly Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The new project will be written by Moore and also has Fargo co-executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi on board.

Everyone seems to want a piece of Moore now that Outlander has become a hit for Starz, which credits the time-traveling drama for helping it earn No. 2 status behind HBO among the most popular premium channels. Since Moore is also executive producing Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams (which is bowing on Amazon in January), fans have grown increasingly antsy about Moore’s ongoing involvement in Outlander, which wrapped up its third season on Dec. 10 — so much that he specifically posted a tweet on Dec. 16 to reassure Sassenachs everywhere.

Before that, Moore also explained on Twitter that Executive Producers Matthew B. Roberts and Toni Graphia run the day-to-day operation in Scotland while he continues to oversee the project. He also admitted that he broke from tradition and didn’t write the premiere episode for season 4, which is shooting now.

The fourth season of Outlander is expected to premiere next fall.
