Victoria Derbyshire has responded to reports that her BBC show is being axed with a defiant statement.

It has been claimed that Victoria Derbyshire, which airs weekday mornings on BBC Two, would be coming off air – apparently due to cuts in the corporation.

However, the presenter opened today's (January 23) episode by appearing to address the show's cancellation.

"We are still here, telling your stories and covering the issues that are important in your life," she said. "And you know what? We don't give up."

The presenter has also tweeted about the decision, writing: "Absolutely devastated at the plan to end our programme (which I first learned about in yesterday's Times).

"I'm unbelievably proud of what our team and our show have achieved in under 5 years breaking tonnes of original stories (which we were asked to do); attracting a working class, young, diverse audience that BBC radio & TV news progs just don't reach (which we were asked to do); & smashing the digital figures (which we were asked to do).

"I'm gutted particularly for our brilliant, young, ambitious, talented team - love 'em. And for all those people we gave a voice to. Love them too."

According to the BBC's media editor Amol Rajan, BBC News is "committed to Victoria" and "the (award-winning) journalism of the show", though he added that the "cost of doing it on linear channel when savings are needed deemed too high".

The morning news programme previously won a BAFTA in 2017, and the presenter has also won and been nominated for several awards.
