Best of the Best 2016: Leisure | Cigars: Espada by Montecristo Estoque

Elegant as this torpedo’s black-and-silver bands are, they unfortunately conceal most of the flawless, silken Nicaraguan Cuban-seed wrapper from Nestor Plasencia’s 2013 harvest. But once you remove the bands and light this Nicaraguan puro, it makes good on the promise of its wrapper. The Estoque delivers a pungent mustard-seed-and-floral flavor that begs for a snifter of Royal Brackla 21 Year Old.

  • In addition to the Jalapa-grown wrapper, the cigar consists of a Jalapa binder and a filler of vintage tobaccos from Nicaragua’s Ometepe island and Condega and Estelí regions.

  • The Estoque is named for the type of sword used by matadors.

  • The cigar is available in only one size, a 6 × 50 torpedo.
