The Best ‘Last Jedi’ Theories, From Snoke Dad to Evil Luke, Ranked

In hindsight, it seems so obvious Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father. They both complained a lot, they both liked lightsabers, and they look exactly the same. Plus, if you watch this crazy independent movie called Revenge of the Sith, it totally shows some dude named Skywalker getting dressed up like Darth Vader. Still, not all Star Wars twists are as easy to predict as the connection between Luke and Darth Vader. And if you haven’t ever seen Star Wars, spoiler alert for everything you just read. We’ll erase it with a Jedi mind trick so good, you won’t even know what a Jedi mind trick even is.

With The Last Jedi less than two months away, Star Wars fans believe several twists bigger than Darth Vader are all coming very soon. So, here are seven of the best Last Jedi fan theories you’ve been hearing about, ranked from least likely to most likely.

7. DJ Is Ezra

What the theory says: The new mysterious hacker character DJ — played by Bencio del Toro — is actually Ezra Bridger from the Disney cartoon Rebels, only as a depressed, older criminal.

Likelihood of being real: I find your lack of faith … justified.

This is one of those theories where the math kind of works, but the motivation to do it makes no sense. With everything Rian Johnson had to juggle in this screenplay, why would he decide to have one of the big reveals be focused on a cartoon character most fans aren’t really familiar with? Don’t get me wrong, Ezra is cool and all, but there’s no way he’s pivotal to this film.

6. Rey Is a Kenobi

What the theory says: Rey is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, which explains why she’s so good with the Force, and possibly, her accent.

Likelihood of being real: I find your lack of faith … justified.

You’ve heard this one pretty much constantly since the ending of The Force Awakens in 2015. If Rey isn’t Luke’s or Han’s daughter, then the hip, alternative choice is to say, “Maybe she’s related to Obi-Wan. He did have a secret lover in The Clone Wars cartoon, remember?”

No. No one remembers that. Again, Satine on The Clone Wars was great, but having to introduce a deceased animated series character into the narrative of The Last Jedi in order for people to figure out Rey’s lineage is insane. Plus, Darth Maul fucking killed Satine in front of Obi-Wan in The Clone Wars. True believers of this theory will tell you there’s a complicated way to argue that Sabine in Rebels is Satine’s daughter and, therefore, Rey’s mother — but come on.

5. Snoke Is Rey’s AND Anakin’s Father

What the theory says: Snoke is the guy who can manipulate the midi-chlorians to create life.

Likelihood of being real: I find your lack of faith … justified.

While it would be kind of interesting to explain the virgin birth of Anakin Skywalker and at the same time reveal that Rey doesn’t really have a family because she was born out of thin air, this too seems like a stretch. Everyone hated the idea that the Force is somehow explained by the fake science of midi-chlorians. If there’s going to be a call back to The Phantom Menace, it seems unlikely this is it.

4. Luke Is the Bad Guy

What the theory says: The true villain of The Last Jedi is Luke Skywalker because he’s totally gone to the Dark side of the Force.

Likelihood of being real: Almost there … almost there.

Obviously, there’s some kind of twist happening with Luke Skywalker in this movie, but him going full-on to the Dark side seems to be too on the nose. Still, Mark Hamill has been trolling everyone on Twitter with the idea that Luke has “always” been the villain. In the most recent trailer, when Luke says, “This isn’t going to go the way you think,” the Dark side of the Force might be too far. But something in that ballpark? Luke going a little more grey … literally and figuratively?

3. Rey Will Turn to the Dark Side and Team Up With Kylo Ren

What the theory says: Rey and Kylo Ren will become besties. The most recent trailer practically screams that this is true.

Likelihood of being real: Search your feelings … you know … some of this is true.

This theory seems to be half right. Rey will probably team up with Kylo Ren, if only because it’s much more interesting to see Kylo develop in a more sympathetic direction. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Rey will have to turn to the Dark side to become Kylo’s new BFF. The circumstances of their team-up could be more temporary or more reasonable than the trailer implies. Or, the whole thing could be a fake-out.

2. Luke Will Uncover a Dark Secret About Jedi History and Become the Final Jedi

What the theory says: Luke will drop a truth bomb — the Jedi actually suck.

Likelihood of being real: Fulfill your destiny!

This is almost certainly going to be true. Luke has a bunch of old Jedi books full of dark secrets. It looks like Rey is learning things about the distant past, including that crazy Force tree. We already know the Jedi were partially responsible for the creation of Darth Vader. And, yes, all of this will mean Luke is the last Jedi and Rey is something entirely new.

1. Rey’s Parents Won’t Matter

What the theory says: Rey’s parents will be explained, but it won’t impact the plot much.

Likelihood of being real: You’re all clear kid!

This seems very likely. Because so much retcon and flashback would have to be involved in convincing the audience that Rey is related to Luke or Han and Leia or Obi-Wan, she’ll instead be related to someone else we’ve never heard of. Some poor Jedi who were hiding from Order 66. Who knows. The point is, it will be sad and tragic, but knowing Rey’s parents’ last names won’t change anything. Rey is probably a brand new kind of hero, meaning she’ll be unburdened from the names Skywalker, Solo, and Kenobi. Wishful thinking? Maybe. But it feels right.

The Last Jedi opens everywhere on December 15.
