Lowe's likes to launch its Black Friday sales early. In fact, the home-improvement retailer offered what it called Black Friday deals all the way back in July. But the real action starts in November and ramps up to some of the biggest discounts on Black Friday itself, when Lowe's re-opens its doors after closing for Thanksgiving Day.
In advance of Black Friday, Lowe's is already touting big markdowns on appliances, tools, holiday decorations and smart-home items both in-store and online. The chain hasn't officially released its Black Friday ad yet, but shopping experts say to expect more of the same on Black Friday, based on pre-Black Friday sales and past experience.
"Lowe's is currently advertising what it calls 'Black Friday Deals Start Now,'" says Courtney Jespersen of NerdWallet. "These early sales should give shoppers a good idea of what will be on sale on Black Friday itself."
Start with tools. Prices have already been slashed by as much as 50%. For example, you can snag a DeWalt 20-volt Max brushless, cordless drill (with two rechargeable batteries) for $99, down from $159. Or, at 50% off, a Kobalt 227-piece mechanics' tool set with case for $99, down from $199.
Holiday decorations are also a good bet for Black Friday as well as in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. You can score a GE 7.5-foot pre-lit mock Colorado Spruce artificial Christmas tree for $198, down from $298. In-store only on Black Friday, expect to get as a doorbuster a $10 Lowe's gift card with the purchase of a fresh-cut Christmas tree (starting at $35).
In addition to trees, both real and artificial, deals expert Andrea Woroch says Lowe's is the place to go for outdoor holiday décor and lighting. "We just bought two blow-up Mickey and Minnie Mouse lawn decorations for my toddler and received 20% off during their limited-time sale," she says. "I could have waited for a better price perhaps over Black Friday, but then I'd run the risk of these selling out." If savings are more important than selection, Woroch recommends taking a chance and buying holiday decorations closer to Christmas, when prices will likely drop further.
Like rival Home Depot, Lowe's is offering big discounts on appliances on and around Black Friday. Already, prices have been slashed up to 40%, and Lowe's is offering a gift card worth $600 for home renovators buying six or more appliances priced at $396 or more. Get a $75 gift card on the purchase of two qualifying appliances.
"[Lowe's is] already rolling out Black Friday pricing on appliances. If you need to replace your dishwasher, fridge or washer/dryer, look for combo-deals and huge discounts on individual items," says Sarah Hollenbeck of the deals website BlackFriday.com. "Also look for smart-home items, such as smart doorbells, locks and security systems, which tend to drop in price at Lowe's on Black Friday."
Just be sure to zero in on the brand and style of appliances you want and compare Black Friday prices at both Lowe's and Home Depot, which is also offering incentives for the purchase of multiple appliances.
One final Black Friday tip: No matter what you buy, after shopping at Lowe's Woroch says to be sure to check your receipt: "Lowe's sometimes prints coupons for money off future purchases. Recently, they have given a coupon for $10 off $75, which is a great way to save."
