If you’re searching for a job in the U.S., the east side of the Mississippi River is where a lot of the action is.
Glassdoor recently ranked Pittsburgh as the best place in America for job openings, followed by St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Hartford, Boston, Memphis, Raleigh, Cleveland, and Detroit.
The company rating site calculated its data by factoring in “how easy it is to get a job, how affordable it is to live there, and how satisfied employees are working there.” From there, each city was given a “City Score,” which helped sort out the overall ranking.

Pittsburgh had the highest city score, 4.7, which was largely driven by its job openings (91,849), median base salary ($46,500), and median home value ($141,300). Some of the most in-demand jobs in the Steel City include financial advisors, registered nurses, and warehouse associates.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 1.1 million people are employed in the city of Pittsburgh, while the unemployment rate stands at 4.4%.
St. Louis, which boasts 75,061 job openings, came in second. The Gateway City is a hotspot for cloud engineers, business analysts, and insurance agents, among many other occupations. With a $48,000 median base salary and $161,400 median home value, St. Louis has an overall 4.3 city score.
With the highest median base salary ($62K) and most job openings (211,602) among the top ten, Boston was ranked sixth overall. Hot jobs in Beantown include project managers, administrative assistants, and software engineers, with the latter being among occupations projected to see the biggest job growth by 2024.
The fifth-best city for job openings, Hartford also has the highest unemployment rate among the group, at 6.6%. In 2017, the state capital was ranked the top city in Connecticut for joblessness.
Glassdoor’s full report includes 25 cities, but only two of them are located on the West Coast: San Francisco and Seattle.
