Best/Worst Daily ETF Returns: EWI Drops 4.21%

Olivier Ludwig

The iShares MSCI Italy Fund (EWI - News) was the second-worst-performing ETF yesterday, losing 4.21 percent on Monday, as the broader equities market sold off amid widespread views that a planned €100 billion bailout for Spanish banks won’t be enough to quell concerns about Spain’s viability.

Spain’s woes and EWI’s place on IndexUniverse’s list of the worst-performing ETFs were the latest signs that the eurozone debt crisis has large potential to spread well beyond Europe and affect economic growth around the world. The Dow Jones industrial average fell almost 143 points, or 1.13 percent, during yesterday’s trading session.

The potential for contagion was plain as day in oil markets amid concern that slowing economic growth is likely to diminish demand for crude. U.S. oil futures have slid more than 16 percent year-to-date, and three oil-related ETNs were on yesterday’s worst-performers list. Oil futures fell another 1.66 percent yesterday to $82.70 a barrel, according to data published in the Wall Street Journal.

The PowerShares DB Crude Oil Long ETN (OLO - News) was the worst-performing of those securities, falling 3.73 percent.

Other energy-related funds were caught in yesterday’s downdraft, including the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG - News), which lost 4.13 percent.

The iPath Dow Jones-UBS Natural Gas Total Return ETN (GAZ - News) was yesterday’s worst-performing ETP, though GAZ’s movements need to be taken with a grain of salt, as its sponsor Barclays closed creations on the ETN in 2009. GAZ’s price and net asset value have deviated ever since.

Top Performers

Two target-based funds, the db-X 2030 Target Date ETF (TDN - News) and the iShares S'P Target Date 2045 Index Fund (TZW - News), made it to the top 10 1-day performers list, as some investors appeared to be making longer-term asset allocation decisions.

Since they move in the opposite direction of equities market, volatility-related ETPs made up the lion’s share of Monday’s top 10 1-day performers list.
