Best & Worst Monthly Performers: June 7 Edition

Here is a look at the 25 best and 25 worst ETFs from the past week. Traders can use this list to find prospective candidates that have deviated too far from their longer-term trends, thereby serving as potential starting points for those looking to take on either short or long positions.

Likewise, traders can also use this list to spot potential trend reversal opportunities that may offer a generous risk/reward. As always, investors of all experience levels are advised to use stop-loss orders and practice disciplined profit-taking techniques.

Best Performing ETFs

The U.S. market showed a downward trend in the last month with all three major indices – the DOW, S&P 500 and NASDAQ declining. The market slid as both the U.S. and China continued to pressurize each other’s economy. Several agricultural crop ETFs such as Teucrium Wheat Fund (WEAT C) and Teucrium Corn Fund (CORN B) topped this month’s list of best performing ETFs as the crop prices increased in spite of continued trade retaliations between the two mighty nations. Prices rebounded as a result of heavy flooding in the U.S. disrupting future plantations. Other agricultural ETFs such as iPath Series B Bloomberg Agriculture Subindex Total Return ETN (JJA B+) and Teucrium Agricultural Fund (TAGS B) also ranked amongst the best performers this month. Several long term treasury bond ETFs like iShares 20 plus Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT B-) and Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (EDV B+) featured on the list of best performing ETFs as interest on U.S. 10 year treasury note declined this month.

Worst Performing ETFs

Several energy equipment & services ETFs like SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Equipment & Services ETF (XES B+), VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH B+) and iShares U.S. Oil Equipment & Services ETF (IEZ B+) ranked amongst the worst performing ETFs. Oil price declined by nearly 8% during the month. Oil price continued to fall on fears of a global economic slowdown due to the U.S.-China trade war and lower than expected decline in the U.S. crude inventories. Several Chinese ETFs, especially those tracking the technology, internet and communication sectors like Invesco China Technology ETF (CQQQ B-), KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB B+) and Global X MSCI China Communication Services ETF (CHIC n/a) made it to the list of worst performing ETFs this month. These sectors suffered a major blow after the U.S. considered banning another Chinese technology firm, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, from doing business in the U.S. SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME A) was one of the contenders on the list of worst performing ETFs as the sector registered a fall of over 8% during the month.
