Best & Worst Monthly Performers: May 8 Edition

Here is a look at the 25 best and 25 worst ETFs from the past week. Traders can use this list to find prospective candidates that have deviated too far from their longer-term trends, thereby serving as potential starting points for those looking to take on either short or long positions.

Likewise, traders can also use this list to spot potential trend reversal opportunities that may offer a generous risk/reward. As always, investors of all experience levels are advised to use stop-loss orders and practice disciplined profit-taking techniques.

Best Performing ETFs

The U.S. market has been showing a positive trend. All three major indices – the DOW, S&P 500 and NASDAQ – increased during this month. The market closed higher on better than expected economic data and a good set of earnings results. Many shipping ETFs like Breakwave Dry Bulk Shipping ETF (BDRY n/a) and Invesco Shipping ETF (SEA A+) ranked amongst the best performing ETFs this month, as the shipping sector attracted a lot of investor attention driven by reasonable valuation. iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB A-) and Invesco Dynamic Building & Construction ETF (PKB A) made it to the list of best performing ETFs as building products and construction materials segments, rose by over 5% and 7% respectively, during the last month. Several semiconductor ETFs like iShares PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXX B+) and SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD B) were present on the list of best performing ETFs as the semiconductor segment gained more than 4% during the month. Information Technology was the second best performing sector this month. Rising demand for innovative technology such as cloud computing, big data, IoT, VR, AI, etc. continues to support growth. Worst-Performing ETFs

Silver ETFs such as PureFunds ISE Junior Silver ETF (SILJ C), Global X Silver Miners ETF (SIL B-) and iShares MSCI Global Silver Miners ETF (SLVP B+) made it to the list of worst performing ETFs as silver price slid by more than 3% during the month. Many gold ETFs such as Sprott Junior Gold Miners ETF (SGDJ ), VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ B) and VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX B+) featured on the list of worst performing ETFs as gold price declined by more than 1% during the month. Gold slid as US dollar rebounded after hawkish comments by the Fed Reserve. Many Biotechnology ETFs like SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI B-) and First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund (FBT C) were constituents of the list of worst performing ETFs as the biotechnology segment declined by more than 5% during the month. Healthcare was the second worst performing sector during the month. Several energy equipment & services ETFs like SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Equipment & Services ETF (XES B+) and iShares U.S. Oil Equipment & Services ETF (IEZ B+) ranked amongst the worst performing ETFs as well.
