NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will participate in a Canadian federal parliament subcommittee on concussions Wednesday, where he’s expected to outline how the league plans to reduce significant brain injuries.
Hall of Fame goaltender and former Liberal MP Ken Dryden drew up 15 potential questions the subcommittee may ask Bettman on Wednesday, in a special to the Toronto Sun, including whether there’s a relationship between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and professional hockey.
CTE is a degenerative brain disease which is caused by repetitive brain trauma, including concussions. The disease can only be diagnosed posthumously, and the NFL has taken measures over the past decade to better understand the condition, which has afflicted numerous players.
At least seven former NHL players have suffered from CTE, according to a 2018 study from The New York Times.
