Beyond Meat rolls out plant-based chicken tenders at select retailers

The chicken wars are still raging — and Beyond Meat (BYND) is leaping into the fray with its own plant-based spin on the white hot food trend.

On Monday, the plant-based meat company announced that, after a successful foodservice launch earlier this summer, Beyond Chicken Tenders will be available to purchase at select retailers nationwide, beginning next month.

The new offering, which comes pre-cooked and ready-to-heat in an air fryer, oven or microwave, will retail for $4.99 and joins a lineup of other faux chicken options from the company, including nuggets, fried chicken and orange chicken.

“Following the tremendous success of our plant-based chicken in restaurants, fans were eager to get their hands on a retail product that’s readily accessible and can be cooked at home anytime,” Deanna Jurgens, Beyond Meat's chief growth officer, said in a press release.

“We’re thrilled to be answering consumer demand by launching Beyond Chicken Tenders at prominent retailers nationwide, continuing our momentum in the plant-based poultry category," Jurgens added.

The tenders will be made using fava beans — a shake up for the plant-based chicken space, which has previously been dominated by soy-based options.

The company also said it plans to expand its product distribution at Walmart (WMT) stores.

In addition to offering the new Beyond Chicken Tenders, Walmart plans to increase the number of stores offering the brand's breakfast sausage patties, as well as increasing availability of Beyond Meatballs and Beyond Beef Crumbles.

Plant-based chicken tenders join the meatless revolution

Overall, the plant-based and vegan food sector has exploded in the U.S. with growth skyrocketing 227% compared to one year ago, according to data intelligence platform Tastewise.

In the last couple of years, chains like Panda Express, KFC, Burger King, Starbucks (SBUX), Dunkin' and Shake Shack have all carved out menu space for alternative meat options — with many choosing partnerships with Beyond Meat.

Most recently, Banza teamed up with Beyond to introduce a new frozen, vegetarian pizza.

In addition, McDonald's (MCD) announced plans to test its meatless McPlant burger in the United Kingdom and Ireland starting September 29.

The McPlant, a collaboration between McDonald's and Beyond Meat, and is part of a three-year global strategic partnership between the two brands.
