Big Fines NFL Teams Were Hit With After Violating COVID-19 Protocols

The NFL issued strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure safety during the pandemic. Then the league put its money where its mouth is when it comes to compliance. Or, as this list shows, the NFL put its teams’ money where its mouth is.

Based on this list, the NFL has issued $3.85 million in fines this season for noncompliance, including failure to wear masks on the sidelines and not following safety standards. The league has even docked two teams a draft pick.

Baltimore Ravens: $250,000

Dec. 27: The NFL fined the Ravens $250,000 for a widespread outbreak. Superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson was one of 23 players placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list over the span of 10 days. The franchise suspended strength coach Steve Saunders for failing to follow protocols.

Denver Broncos: $350,000

Sept. 21: Coach Vic Fangio and the team were fined a combined $350,000 ($250,000 for the Broncos, $100,000 for Fangio) for Fangio’s failure to wear a mask during a game.

San Francisco 49ers: $350,000

Sept. 21: Coach Kyle Shanahan and the team were fined a combined $350,000 ($250,000 for the 49ers, $100,000 for Shanahan) for Shanahan’s failure to wear a mask during a game.

Seattle Seahawks: $350,000

Sept. 21: Coach Pete Carroll and the team were fined a combined $350,000 ($250,000 for the Seahawks, $100,000 for Carroll) for Carroll’s failure to wear a mask during a game.

Sept. 22: Coach Jon Gruden and the team were fined a combined $350,000 ($250,000 for the Raiders, $100,000 for Gruden) for Gruden’s failure to wear a mask during a game.

Oct. 25: From Sept. 24 to Oct. 11, a total of 24 members of the Titans organization tested positive for COVID-19, leading to postponements of games against the Steelers and Bills.

Nov. 5: The NFL fined the Raiders $500,000 and a 2021 sixth-round draft pick, and fined coach Jon Gruden $150,000 for protocol violations related to Trent Brown’s positive test.
