"It's strictly business" muttered Al Pacino in The Godfather. Of course, he was referring to some the slaughtering of his enemies and other mafia-related japes. But if he were around today he could have talking about the growing popularity of that Sicilian battle armour, the big overcoat, where in 2019 business is booming.

Immortalised by Coppola's classic and the suspiciously twitchy cast of Goodfellas, wise guy outer layers are bigger than ever this year. A slew of Very Famous Men have gone full caporegime in a range of colours: Mark Strong opted for some richly woollen blues, Victor Cruz kept it neutral while Hugh Jackman went cosy. As far as we're aware, none of these men have ever moonlighted as a loanshark meaning it's a trend open to the rest of us too.

In nutshell: you go oversized, letting a boxy fit add bulk to your silhouette. But the important part to remember is your sleeves, which should fit in the convention sense of breaking at your wrists. To finish the look, pair your mob boss coat with the archetypal mob boss uniform: all-black tailoring. Recently championed by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Christian Bale, it's as sharp as it is vaguely menacing. Otherwise, throw over your normal weekend civvies to avoid getting pinched.
